Light vs. dark. It’s a battle as old as the galaxy itself, but perhaps never told as memorably or powerfully as in the Star Wars saga. Just like in real life, things are not always black and white. The Star Wars characters are complicated, and the Skywalker family tree, like most families, is filled with good-hearted folks … and a few black sheep.

The Skywalker who shines the brightest in the galaxy is undoubtedly Luke, who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest Jedi Knights ever known. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens, people are wondering, “Where is Luke Skywalker?” but the bigger question is, “Who is Luke Skywalker?” Exploring the answer—both who Luke is as a man and his place in history, is central to the plot of the seventh episode. The new film also introduces a new baddie, Kylo Ren, who’s following in the footsteps of his granddaddy, Darth Vader.
