As we all know, building a team to meet whatever challenges we face can sometimes be… well… challenging. Now imagine doing that when each teammate has a very strong personality and unique special powers. That is one of the fascinating aspects of the story in Marvel Studios’ new live-action film, The Marvels.

When unintended events see Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe, her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary. As her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), and Carol’s estranged niece, S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), the trio must forge a team to save the universe.

But can these three strong women harness their diverse and distinct personalities to defeat evil?

It helps that each Super Hero has her own way of looking at life, plus her own hopes, fears, concerns and sense of humor. Eventually those personal attributes, as much as their superpowers, help them deepen their connections with each other and give the story its heart.

No amount of problem punching over the past thirty years can repair the broken promises Carol Danvers has made to those closest to her nor undo the damage she wrought upon the Kree Empire, destabalizing it for the worse. Captain Marvel is a powerful solo act but now has a shot at real redemption as a team member of the Marvels.

Ms. Marvel (aka Kamala Khan)

As imaginative as she is tenacious, Kamala Khan has encountered much in her Ms. Marvel adventures, but nothing could have prepared this small-town, teenaged hero to leave Jersey for a cosmic adventure of galactic proportions and team up with her idol, Captain Marvel, and Captain Monica Rambeau in which they become The Marvels!

Capt. Monica Rambeau

Monica Rambeau’s life changed course forever after the events of WandaVision, when her exposure to reality altering energy imbued her with the power to perceive and manipulate all energy along the electromagnetic spectrum. These newfound abilities exponentially empower Monica as an astronaut and scientist of S.A.B.E.R. but also position her, however reluctantly, as a super hero on the same power playing field as her long-lost Aunt Carol. Naturally empathetic and a strategist, Monica’s honed leadership abilities come in clutch for The Marvels.

It’s the characters’ personalities, conflicts and ultimate teamwork that makes The Marvels an exciting and moving story. The film not only celebrates their superpowers but also lets us see their human side—the side which makes them into heroes we can identify with, love and care about.
