The Origin of Disney’s Grey Stuff

In Beauty and the Beast, when a hungry Belle finds herself wandering the Beast’s castle on her first night, Lumiere insists that she rest and relax while the enchanted staff treats her to an unforgettable dinner. Early in the meal, Lumiere unveils a gleaming silver platter, presenting Belle with an enticing array of small bites—including the mysterious Grey Stuff! Belle dips a finger in the beautifully piped swirl, which sits atop a cookie with scalloped edges, creating an iconic movie moment that fans have been eager to try in real life ever since.

How Chefs Created the Grey Stuff

For this at-home version of the Grey Stuff, you’ll be creating a pudding with whipped topping folded in. A puree of chocolate sandwich cookies stirred in lends the dessert its distinctive grey hue. Once it’s all mixed together and chilled, a sprinkling of sugar pearls adds a delightful finishing touch.

Note: This version of the Grey Stuff recipe has been converted specifically for home cooks to use. It may vary slightly from the version made in larger quantities in Disney’s kitchens.
