“I wanted to make a film that spoke to the environment, to our relationships and how we should be thoughtful about how we live our lives and the legacy we leave each other,” says Don Hall, Director (Oscar®-winning Big Hero 6, Raya and the Last Dragon).

Every story needs a hero. But some heroes are reluctant ones. Take Searcher Clade (Jake Gyllenhaal). Searcher’s father, Jaeger Clade (Dennis Quaid), a famous explorer, expects Searcher to carry on the family legacy of exploration. Searcher has different goals.

Years ago, Jaeger compelled Searcher to go with him to explore the rugged mountains surrounding their homeland of Avalonia. The two got into an argument, and Searcher returned to Avalonia. But Jaeger disappeared and hasn’t been seen since.

Twenty-five years have passed. In that time, Searcher, his wife Meridian, their teenage son Ethan and their three-legged dog, Legend, began farming crops of Pando, a plant with special properties that brought prosperity to Avalonia. Then, without warning, the Pando crops started dying. Avalonia is in crisis.

Callisto Mal (Lucy Liu), the head of Avalonia, asks Searcher and Meridian to help her search for the root of the problem. Ethan, who is struggling to find his own path, stows away on Callisto’s airship. During their journey, the explorers accidentally crash through a rock barrier and plunge into a dazzling and very Strange World.

Strange World

It is unlike anything Searcher and Ethan—and audiences—have ever seen before. It’s inhabited by strange beings, such as shoals of flying fish-like creatures, giant walking columns of tree-like structures and octopus-like monsters. It’s beautiful in an unnerving sort of way, and its vastness and strangeness help open Searcher’s mind. When Searcher finds Jaeger, their reunion opens the door for reconciliation. But Searcher must confront some important truths about his own roles as a son, father and community member.

To create the fantastical world of Strange World, artists drew upon illustrations for 19th and 20th century novels, as well as pulp magazine covers and French and Belgian comics published during the first half of the 20th century.

The action is fast, surprising and often very funny—thanks in large part to a dog. “Disney legend Burny Mattinson, known for his contributions as a storyboard artist and storyteller, was on our story crew, and early on he told me, ‘I think you need a dog,’” says Hall. “So we added one. I named him Legend because that’s what I call Burny. The film just became funnier because of him.”
